Jaffna is the capital city of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Most of the population at Jaffna is that of the Sri Lankan Tamils. The Tamil version of the name of the city means, 'the city of harper'. Had it not been for the conflicts between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government, Jaffna would have retained its position of the second largest city of Sri Lanka. Jaffna had been and even now, is one of the most important cities of Sri Lanka. The city is famous as a tourist destination, for its scenic locales and elegant structures. Jaffna has a long and eventful history. The city had been a colony of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the Britishers.

Each of these imperial powers has left their indelible impression on the life, culture, art and architecture of Jaffna. The impressive structures, which you will find all across the city, are all remnants of the eras gone by. The magnificent Library of Jaffna and the statue of King Sangli are few things which one must not forget to visit while visiting Jaffna. The famous temple of Nallur Kandasamy Kovil, the most prestigious place of Hindu worship in Jaffna, is a majestic structure. The other attractions of Jaffna include the shrines of Naga Poosani Ambal Kovil, Nallur Kovil and Nagadipa Purana Vihara. All these places of religious significance make Jaffna a very interesting place to visit. The tourism industry had faced a grave danger during the civil strife. But the city has now recuperated to a great extent, and tourism is being promoted in Jaffna, all over again. This has led to the development of the hospitality industry in Jaffna. As a result many hotels, which were closed down in the recent past are again opening up. Though less in number, the hotels of Jaffna can be a real retreat for a peace loving individual.
