Jaffna City Tours |

|
Jaffna, situated on the northern coasts of Sri Lanka, presents a ravishing picture, which will leave the nature loving tourist mesmerized. The uniqueness of Jaffna lies in the fact that, it has preserved most of its pristine beauty. The foreign influences that has its effect on most parts of Sri Lanka, has in no way affected this lovely city. Jaffna has remained untouched by all sorts of modernizing influences because of the fact that, the city has been the center point of a civil strife which raged for almost two decades. The signing of the ceasefire ended this strife in 2002. Since then, Jaffna has been trying to regain its lost glory, and till date has had a commendable success. The city of Jaffna had been ruled by several dynasties and colonial powers.

The culmination of these cultures has led to the formation of a unique lifestyle which is typical of Jaffna. The city of Jaffna has been a witness to the reign of few of the greatest Tamilian dynasties. The temples in Jaffna constructed during these times form few of the major attractions of Jaffna. Jaffna city tours will permit you to visit these splendid pieces of architectures. Besides the holy shrines and temples, there are other imposing buildings which had been constructed during the colonial periods, when either the Portuguese, or the Dutch or the Britishers ruled Jaffna.
While touring Jaffna city, you should not miss out on the following places of attraction:
- Nallur Kandsamy Kovil – This temple, dedicated to the Lord Murugan is the premier place of Hindu worship in Jaffna. Its tip is covered in gold, and an elaborate 'gopuram' attracts travelers from far and wide. Besides religious worshippers, this splendid temple is visited by thousands of other tourists for its sheer beauty.
- Naga Pooshani Ambal Kovil – A temple constructed on the orders of a rich businessman who had been blessed by the Ambal Devi. This temple was destroyed by the Portuguese and was rebuilt in the 18th century. Presently, this temple is dedicated to Meenakshi Devi, wife of Lord Shiva.
- Nagadipa Purana Vihara – Located on the Nainativu Island, which lies very close to Jaffna, this temple is of great importance for the Buddhists, as this is one among the 16 places in Sri Lanka, which had been visited by the Buddha himself.
- Nallur Kovil – An aesthetically decorated Hindu Temple, the Nallur Kovil, is best visited during the months of July and August, when a Hindu festival goes on.
- Public Library of Jaffna – this stately building has been constructed in the Moghul style. It had been torched by a mod in 1981, but had been reconstructed in the recent pat. Though most of the treasures of the library were lost during the attack, what remains today can also be considered to be one of the best collections in entire south Asia.
