Road Transport in Jaffna
The Ceylon Transport Board or CTB was a nationalized enterprise operating all the public bus transports in Sri Lanka from the years 1958 to 1978. Actually, this is the biggest omnibus company in the world operating transport in a country. Around 7,000 buses are operational over here and more than 50,000 employees work for the organization. Road transport in Jaffna takes care of the fact that people can reach Jaffna from different parts of the country quite easily and can go to the different parts of the country from Jaffna.

The organization is divided into numerous regional boards and broadly into different companies. Later on the organization was renamed as the Sri Lanka Transport Board in 2005. In the year 1907 the first motor omnibus was imported in Sri Lanka. Bus transport in Sri Lanka began as purely an owner-operated service. There was no particular regulation for plying of buses in the area of Jaffna. Several buses operated on a single route. In order to yield out maximum profit out of the bus service on Jaffna roads safety and comfort were pushed to the back seat in Jaffna by the mid-1930s.
Buses plying during the earliest days on the main routes had open bodies. Passengers used to get in from both the sides of the bus and people used to get in through a door at the backside of the bus. The openings of the buses were closed by a buttoned down leather cloth that could easily be rolled up whenever necessary. The Nelson Commission was appointed by the British government to look into the draw backs of the bus transport service in Sri Lanka at that time. The commission recommended the replacing of open body buses with the closed body buses. These closed body buses were later known as ‘Nelson body’ buses. These are the tools that the early road transport in Jaffna consisted of.
Many other omnibus companies that took the baton of road transport in Jaffna from their parent company were the South Western Bus Company, the Silverline Bus Company, Sri Lanka Omnibus Company, the Ebert Silva Bus Company, Wijaya Bus Company, Panadura Bus Company, Siri Medura Bus Company, K. B. L. Perera and Sons, etc.
