Frenchman Count de Maunay was once the owner of Weligama and built a lovely house on it. Weligama is famous for hand made lace, stilt fishing, sea food and Devil Dance Shows. Weligama is the haven for people interested in surfing, snorkelling and scuba diving.
Catamaran rides are attractive vocation in Weligama for those who want to remain above the sea surface. You can view hoards of sharks and dolphins in the deeper sea.
For people who are interested in diving there are some unique sites in Weligama. Yala Rock is a rocky terrain in Weligama whose height is 15 meters. This area lies 5 meters below the sea surface. There are several small caves beside the rocks which are full of interesting fishes like napoleon patriotfish, turtles and rays. You can find an array of vibrant corals here. If you dive at night you can see the walk of lobsters. 24 meters is the maximum depth to dive.
The Wreck of Rangoon is another major attraction in Weligama. Rangoon was a famous ship which was built in the year 1863. Near the Galle harbor a few decades before it sank. Now you have to travel 30 to 35 meters deep in the rocky area to see the wreck. You will see colorful fishes traveling through the carcass of the ship.
Visit the Prinz Heinrich Patch. The journey is excellent towards Mirissa along the shore. There is an underwater hill whose rise is 7 meters neneath the surface of the water. You can see patriotfish, murrains and big rays here. 22 meters is the maximum depth you can dive here.
Mirissa Point is the ideal place for the beginners to start diving. You can go for night diving here and can see sleeping patriotfish, octopus and sepias.
