The concept of providing care and attention to the new born and young orphan elephants materialized with the establishment of the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage in Colombo due to the initiatives of the department of wild life in Sri Lanka.
Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage in Colombo had initially started with just five elephants and now this number has grown to 40. Visitors coming to Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage are often amused to see these elephants of various sizes. The sight of the elephants moving freely on the plush greenery will definitely make you feel pleased. The orphanage remains open throughout the day.
The most wonderful sight that one witnesses in the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage in Colombo is the feeding of the baby elephants. Daily in the morning around 0915 hrs and in the afternoon at around 1615 hrs the baby elephants are fed with feeding bottles. The whole process takes place inside the stalls built in the area. You can watch this wonderful sight and can even take pictures. One of the most amusing sight is to see the baby elephants taking baths. This elephant orphanage has not only provided the young elephants a better place to live but has also taken steps in providing them ultimate care and affection that the animals of this world deserve.
