Colombo got its name from the Portuguese in 1505 and thanks to its natural harbor and strategic position Colombo was known as a popular trade route among the ancient traders. It came to be recognized as the capital of Sri Lanka in 1815 only after Sri Lanka was handed over to the British and after Sri Lanka’s independence Colombo’s status as the capital of Sri Lanka was retained. Being the commercial capital of Sri Lanka the road transport in Colombo is known to be highly advanced in nature to promote active commercialism and tourism.
Road transport in Colombo comprises of buses, trains, auto rickshaws (better known as the three wheelers in Sri Lanka) and lastly the taxicabs. The bus service in Sri Lanka is operated mostly by both the private and the government sectors. The auto rickshaws or the three wheelers are totally operated by individuals and these services are hardly regulated. The cab services which are run by the private companies are mostly metered. In fact the trains are mainly known to be the cheapest form of transport in Colombo. Colombo Metro Rail experienced a fast construction also termed as Mass Rapid Transit railway system which is quite similar to that of the advanced Asian cities. The Mass Rapid Transit railway system project is carried out by the NEB Rapid which is an Indian and Singaporean project on collaboration.
