Beaches In Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is an island country in South Asia located in the Indian Ocean to the Southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to the Southeast of the Arabian Sea. Its coastline is 1340 km. There are many beautiful and attractive beaches around Sri Lanka.
A coastal beach is a landscape at a coastal area of an ocean, a sea, a lake or a river. It usually consists of sands, pebbles, shingle. People use the coastal beach to swim, to work on their tan or spend their leisure time. The most popular beach has white or light color sands and warm water to swim. If people have facilities to dive and to visit marine creatures, those beaches become popular. There are some man-made infrastructure facilities like lifeguard posts, changing rooms, hospitality places (resorts, camps, hotels, and restaurants) on some beaches.

Hikkaduwa is a small town on the southern coast of Sri Lanka and is located in the Galle District in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. It is about 14 km northwest of Galle. It is one of the most advanced beach resorts and is famous for surfing and sea turtles. There is a coral sanctuary nearby, a large shallow place surrounded by a reef. The waters off the coast are a beautiful view of the sea, sun, sand, and joy. Above the beach, there is a collection of small islands. Watching the sunset, boat riding, diving, and surfing are great excursions. All types of diving gear can be easily rented. Any kind of seafood and other food and all kinds of garments can be bought easily there.
Unawatuna is located in Galle District in Southern Province and 140 km south of Colombo. It is half a circle and it is about 1 km. It is famous for sea turtles population and tourists can see the laying of eggs along the beach. It consists of inherent rare biodiversity, coral reef, and shipping wreck. A calm ocean most suitable for various water sports activities especially for scuba, diving, and snorkeling. Unawatuna coastal beach is the jewelry of the south coastal beach on the island. The best time to visit is late August and early September of the year as the rain starts to set in by mid-October. Unawatuna gives the life to incalculable resorts, hotels, restaurants, seafood clothes and various kinds of goods sell in small trade centers. Nilaveli is located in Trincomalee District in Eastern Province in Sri Lanka. Nilaveli is a coastal resort and 16 km of North West of the city of Trincomalee. The distant from Colombo is 276 km and 14 km from Trincomalee. It is 4 km long. Pigeon Island National Park is located in this region 1 km off from the beach and many species of vegetation, coral and reef, fish contribute to the rich biodiversity of Nilaveli.
Mirissa beach is located in Matara District in Southern Province in Sri Lanka. Mirissa beach is located close to the southern tip of Sri Lanka. Approximately 200 km from the equator. It is 4 km southeast of Weligama.
Arugam Bay Beach
Arugam bay beach is in Ampara District in Eastern Province. Arugam bay is located from 317 km from Colombo and there are several fishing villages near there. It is the best 4th beach in South East Asia. Lahugala national park and Yala east national park are located within a 10-30 km radius from the Arugam bay center. Kudumbigala temple (Buddhist temple), Shastraveli Buddhist temple and Okanda Hindu temple are all in this area.
Passikuda beach is in Batticaloa District in Eastern Province. Passikuda and Kalkuda are two beaches 34 km North of Batticaloa. Passikuda is a busy tourist place with comfortable hotels and shallow coastal line.
Negombo beach situated in Gampaha District in Western Province in Sri Lanka. Negombo is 7 km from Bandaranayake International Airport and 37 km from Colombo (the commercial capital city). The economy of the town is mostly based on the fishing and tourism industry. It is a wide beach and calm sea.
Kalpitiya is located in Puttalam District North West Province In Sri Lanka. Kalpitiya is a fishing village. It is situated on the western coast of Sri Lanka 170 km. The beaches are remote and uncrowded. The major activities are centered around the lagoon. The wind is suitable for windsurfing, and kite surfing. It is one of the spots where whales and dolphins can be watched. Kalpitiya can be reached via Colombo main road /A3.
Mount Lavinia Beach
Mount Lavinia is situated in the Colombo District in the Western Province. It is located about 7 kilometers from Colombo, (the commercial capital city) of Sri Lanka. The city is famous for its “Golden Mile” and has become a popular tourist destination.
Kalutara is located in Kalutara District in Western Province. It is about a kilometer from the commercial capital city of Kalutara. It has a tropical climate and is covered with palm trees. During the colonial period, it was a major spice town.
Beruwala beach is in Galle District in Southern Province in Sri Lanka. Beruwala is a city located 55 km south of Colombo and 92 km south of Bandaranayake International Airport. It is the first main beach resort of the South Western coastal belt and it can be reached by Colombo-Galle motor road A2 as well as Southern coastal railway line. It is a large fishing centre.
Bentota is in Galle District in Southern Province in Sri Lanka. Bentota is a city located 64 km from Colombo and 101 km south of Bandaranayake International Airport. It is a largely rural area and the land is dominated by tall coconut palm trees. It can be reached by the Colombo-Galle main road (A2) as well as the Colombo-Galle-Matara Southern railway line.
Weligama beach is in Matara District in Southern Province in Sri Lanka. Weligama beach is one of the best beginner surf spots in Sri Lanka. Weligama is a small fishing town located 30 km east of Galle. It is relatively quiet and is located around a broad bay. The name Weligama is translated to the sandy village and describe the surrounding landscape. It can be reached there by the main(A2) Colombo-Galle-Matara road, Southern expressway and via Colombo Galle railway line.
Polhena Beach is located in the Matara District of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. Polena Beach is located in Matera and has a 1.2 km long coral reef about 80 meters off the coast. Because of this, the water near the beach is relatively quiet, a commonplace for tourists to swim, and snorkeling, surfing, and sunset on Polhena Beach are common.
Dikwala Beach is located in Matara district in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. This is mostly protected by headlands and sand bars, which are safe for swimmers. It is located about 22 kilometers east of Matara. Sri Lanka’s largest statue of the Lord Buddha is located in Dikwella.
Batticaloa beach is in Batticaloa District in Eastern Province in Sri Lanka. Batticaloa is a city located south of Batticaloa in Eastern Province. The city is located in a landscape around estuarine and lagoon in the Indian Ocean. It is a popular snorkeling and scuba diving spot, because of the rich corals in the coast line. Batticaloa is famous for singing fish near the Kalladi bridge which is seven kilometers off the middle of the city. The sound of the music comes from a marine creature lives in the waters of the lagoon.
